At its founding, Democracy Prep was part of a “no-excuses” movement of urban charter schools that prized rigid disciplinary rules and strict academic expectations – and often achieved high test scores. The network, which focused its curriculum on civics education, eventually expanded to 21 schools across multiple states, and currently serves 6,500 students.
