Cops approached Garner on Bay St. in Tottenville, Staten Island, on July 17, 2014, for selling loose cigarettes. When Garner objected, Pantaleo applied the chokehold, cutting off Garner’s air supply. Garner repeated “I can’t breathe” at least 11 times before collapsing to the street. He died later that day.
