ALLAN WERNICK: Proving derivative citizenship status through a parent’s naturalization

A. Your best path to getting proof is to file U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship. Normally, you would submit your mother’s naturalization certificate along with the application, but since you can’t get it you can ask USICS to check their records to confirm her naturalization. You need to file N-600 because if you are already a U.S. citizen, USCIS will deny your naturalization application.
