Amarjeet Sohi has been elected the next mayor of Edmonton.
With nearly 89 per cent of voting stations reporting Monday night, Sohi had a lead of 37,641 votes over Mike Nickel.
Sohi had more than 44 per cent of the overall votes, compared to Nickel’s 26 per cent.

Sohi, a 57-year-old former city councillor and Liberal Member of Parliament, was up against 10 other candidates.
He will be Edmonton’s first mayor of South Asian origin. Sohi was born in Punjab, India, and moved to Edmonton when he was 18.
