B.C Reporting 2,239 new COVID19 Cases; Hospitalization increasing

Health Minister Adrian Dix and Chief Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provide an update on COVID-19 on December 21, 2021.

Victoria, BC (WNews Vancouver) – B.C. is reporting 2,239 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, including nine epi-linked cases, for a total of 286,080 cases in the province. Province has no plans to bring in mandatory vaccination requirements

The province also reported three new deaths in the past day.

807 new cases were reported in Fraser Health, 383 in Coastal Health, 318 in Interior Health, 167 in Northern, 562 in Island, and two cases from people residing outside of Canada.

There are 36,087 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, and 244,551 people who tested positive have recovered. Of the active cases, 469 individuals are in hospital (up from 431) and 97 (up from 95) are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

There have been four new healthcare facility outbreaks at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Glenwood Seniors Community (Fraser Health), Saanich Peninsula Hospital – Long Term Care, and Oyster Harbour (Island Health). The outbreaks at Mission Memorial Hospital and Hawthorne Lodge (Fraser Health) have been declared over. There are currently 45 healthcare facility outbreaks in the province.

B.C says No to mandatory vaccinate

Last week, in response to the growing caseload, Last week Federal Minister Jean Yves Duclos suggested the provinces consider mandatory vaccines for all facets of life. Alberta Premier’s Jason Kenny responded saying that Alberta will put in a mandatory vaccination policy.

B.C at the weekly press conference announced mandatory vaccination is not something being considered here. B.C. will also not charge unvaccinated people for health care like Quebec has announced.

Dr Bonnie Henry says she does not foresee this is something B.C. would consider in regards to mandatory vaccination.

The province is looking at a possible field hospital. But the province is looking at options. Could be at Vancouver Convention Centre.

530 non-urgent surgeries were postponed last week which Includes 234 surgeries in Island Health.

The province also mentioned that 8,821 beds are being used at B.C Hospitals for various reasons. 87.2% of the ICU beds are being used as well.

From Jan 3 to Jan 9 there were 27,937 shifts across the health care sector that people called in for different illnesses.
