A 4.0-kilometre (2.5 mi) deep earthquake measuring magnitude (Mw ) 6.2 struck southeastern Afghanistan on June 22 2022 at 01:24:36 AFT (on 21 June 2022 at 20:54:36 UTC). It affected the provinces of Paktika and Khost, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It was felt over 500 km (310 mi) away by at least 119 million people,[3] including in Pakistan’s Punjab and in parts of India and Iran.[4][5] According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe).

At least 1,163 people died and more than 6,000 others were injured throughout eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan, making it the deadliest earthquake of 2022 and the deadliest in Afghanistan since 1998.At least 10,000 homes had collapsed or were severely damaged. The earthquake was very destructive relative to its magnitude due to its shallow hypocenter underneath a densely populated area prone to landslides, in which low-quality buildings made of wood and mud are not earthquake-resistant.

Gayan and Barmal districts of Paktika Province were the most affected, with at least 238 and 500 deaths, respectively. In Gayan, approximately 1,800 homes, or 70 percent of the district’s homes, were destroyed. Three days later, a magnitude 4.2 aftershock killed five people and wounded 11 more in Gayan District
