Betteil’s son, Matt Betteil, 59, said his father has a long history of survival. The elder Betteil was born in Poland in 1923 and managed to overcome the cruelties of six concentration camps. He was finally released on May 5, 1945, when American soldiers rolled up in tanks to rescue survivors. He lost a younger sister and grandparents to the Holocaust.
