EDMONTON (WNEWS) — An Alberta woman developed a rare blood clot disorder after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine and died. She was in her 50’s.
Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, confirmed in a statement that the death was linked to VITT. She said that this is the only death related to VITT out of more than 253,000 doses of AstraZeneca that have been administered in Alberta.
Hinshaw said, “It is important to remember that the risks of dying or suffering other severe outcomes from COVID-19 remain far greater than the risk following the AstraZeneca vaccine.”
The global risk of developing VITT is estimated at approximately four cases per million doses of vaccine.
